Help Hub City Press move into its brand new office

Imagine trying to run the South’s leading independent literary press out of the tiny backroom of a bookstore. When we opened our doors in August of 2010 we had just two full-time staff members working in a 700 square foot backroom--now we have seven people working in the same space! As we hit our 25th anniversary in 2020, Hub City Press at last has the opportunity to have its own storefront. We’re moving out of the Hub City Bookshop, and we need your help.

It’s an exciting time for us. Now funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, Hub City Press books are winning awards and being reviewed in big-city newspapers across the United States. They are blurbed by national authors like Roxane Gay, Alexander Chee, Lauren Groff, and Tim O’Brien. Hub City authors are touring from coast to coast. Our bookshop, meanwhile, has been listed among the best in the South by Southern Living magazine. It was awarded Bibb’s Pick—Best in the South by the Southern Independent Booksellers Association last year. We’ve been growing like crazy and …

...This is where you come in.

An opportunity arose for us to lease an 850-square-foot office in a historic building directly behind the Hub City Bookshop, beginning April 1. The proximity gives our Press employees quick access to the home base. The new space offers enough room for a front workroom with a conference table, shipping counter, shelving for stock, and a second room for desks.

The space is a former law office and requires some upfitting. We need to remove a divider wall, close up a doorway, and replace old and cracked tile flooring and peeling carpeting. We want to cut a six-foot-wide opening between two rooms to better connect the spaces and bring natural light to the second room (which currently has no windows). We need to purchase furnishings, including but not limited to: a conference table, chairs, a counter suitable for mailing with lots of drawers for storage, bookcases to house our stock, a couch for a seating area, and open shelving for under the windows. We need to hook up phones and internet to the network at the bookshop and pre-pay some of the rent.

Please be a part of our 25th anniversary and help the Hub City Writers Project raise $5,000 this month to make this possible. Your tax-deductible donation of any size is greatly appreciated. Everyone who donates will receive a sticker and note of thanks from us.
